This project involved the custom design and installation of Modern Craftsman window surrounds for a residence in Ramona, CA. The client’s primary objective was to upgrade the aesthetic of a standard corner window setup while integrating a concealed housing for window blinds.
The centerpiece of the design is a removable header system, allowing for high-end architectural detail without compromising the long-term serviceability of the window treatments.
The original windows were finished with standard drywall returns, lacking character and architectural depth. The client wanted the sophistication of built-in window treatments but faced a common dilemma:
Aesthetics: Exposed blind headers often look cluttered and industrial.
Access: Traditional “boxed-in” valances make it nearly impossible to repair or replace blinds without damaging the surrounding woodwork.
HomeSmith developed a “Serviceable Craftsman” design. We built a deep-profile surround that gives the window a substantial, grounded presence.
The Hidden Valance: A custom-sized header box was integrated into the top trim to fully tuck away the blind hardware.
The Removable Header: Instead of permanently nailing the top crown assembly, we engineered it as a modular component. This allows the homeowner to “pop the top” for maintenance or blind replacement, then snap it back into place for a seamless finish.
